Twice in scripture an identity term is ascribed to the Holy Spirit that links Him with El Elyon, usually translated "the Most High God." "The LORD thundered from heaven, and the Most High uttered His voice, hail stones and coals of fire." Psalm 18:13 The reference to the voice by the psalmist indicates a correlation to the Holy Spirit.In the New Testament, Gabriel referred to the power of the Highest to describe the Holy Spirit when he explained to Mary how she would bear a son and remain a virgin. (read Luke 1:35)
The identity names of the Holy Spirit being linked with El Elyon emphasize the rightful authority of the Holy Spirit over all of His creation. They also imply that the power of the Holy Spirit is supreme over whatever power might be associated with other spiritual beings.
Isaiah tells us that Lucifer was cast out of heaven because of his quest to challenge God's authority in heaven and "be like the Most High" (Isa. 14:4). Perhaps because of the significance of this name in the beginning of their continuing rebellion against God, the name El Elyon seems to be the name demons most often used when addressing Jesus (see Mark 5:7).
As believers, we must constantly be aware that we are a part of the ongoing spiritual conflict between God and the devil. This conflict began with the devil's refusal to recognize the rightful authority of El Elyon over all creation. Thankfully, one day it will end with the devil's realization of the supreme power of El Elyon. But until that day, spiritual warfare is a continual part of our lives.
How precious to remember that the Holy Spirit, who lives IN us, is more powerful than any demon at Satan's disposal!
Rejoice in the Most High God - El Elyon
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them (any demon at Satan's disposal) because He who is in you (the Holy Spirit) is greater than he who is in the world (Satan and his demons). 1 John 4:4
