When Gabriel brought Mary the heavenly news that would forever change her life - and OURS - he also brought her a bit of family news:has also conceived a son in her old age;
and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month.
For nothing will be impossible with God.
Luke 1:36-37
"For nothing is impossible with God." Do you believe that? Really? NOTHING? REALLY?
So often we face challenging circumstances that seem insurmountable. I've watched a couple of single women in my Sunday School class struggle with unemployment for more than a year with no prospects in sight. I've watched others face frightening medical diagnoses that have made their entire futures precarious. I've watched others reel from relationship struggles like infidelity, abandonment and betrayal.
Many of us face challenges that seem insurmountable. We look at our abilities, our financial resources, and even the allotment of time we have to meet the challenge and we throw up our hands in despair and frustration.
Yet, our faith in God and His ability to fulfill all His plans and promises for us is encouraged when we read about old, barren Elizabeth who became pregnant, and about the Savior of the world who was growing in Mary's womb.
Mary chose the believe the impossible when the angel told her "the power of the Most High will overshadow you."
I wonder . . .
- What impossible obstacle do you need the power of the Most High God to overshadow in your life today?
- What challenging circumstance do you need to place in His capable hands?
- What promises do you need to trust God to fulfill in your life?

Holy Lord God, You are a great and awesome God! You used a young Jewish girl to bring forth Your glory in the person of Jesus. Grant me the faith to know You can use me to Your glory too. Help me "bring forth" Jesus in my life as I celebrate His birth this Christmas season. Enable me to take my eyes off my circumstances and rivet them on the miracle of Jesus' birth, death and resurrection. Amen.
