"...for the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome ..." Deuteronomy 10:17
For the month of December my Sunday School class is studying Isaiah 9:6 and examining each of the birth names of Jesus that the prophet foretold more than 700 years before the Promised One was born. With each name, it's important for us to remember that every name of God in scripture is a dual revelation. It tells us something about God and it tells us something about what He wants to do for us.
When Isaiah said Messiah would be called MIGHTY GOD, he used the Hebrew name, EL GIBBOR. EL is a name for God that means powerful or one who has the power to ... It is often coupled with other names (like El Shaddai - which means one who has the power to be sufficient or El Roi - one who has the power to see). GIBBOR means champion or hero. Christ was promised to be the One with the power to be our hero! Does that make you want to shout hallelujah? It does me! Don't we all need a hero today?
Jesus' flesh and blood birth ushered into humankind the presence of EL GIBBOR - the Mighty God - to dwell with men - Immanuel - God with us!
Jesus is YOUR Mighty God today.
- He is El Gibbor, the Mighty God of strength
- He can give you endurance
- He can protect you in danger
- He is a firm rock Who can give you stability
The mighty protection of El Gibbor begins with an intimate relationship. You must know Him personally and rest in Him intimately. He can't protect what you don't give Him, so you must trust Him with all that you have.
Sing - and PRAY - the words of the hymn Rock of Ages (Rock of ages, cleft for me, let me hide myself in thee ...) Thank God for sending Jesus to be YOUR Mighty God.
He is
- mighty in majesty
- mighty in mastery
- mighty in mercy
- mighty in ministry
and because He is, He is therefore
- mighty to save
- mighty to keep
- and mighty to perfect
YOUR Mighty God is
- mighty to answer prayer
- mighty to overcome bad habits
- mighty to help you resist temptation
- mighty to give you peace in the middle of a storm
- mighty to take you off your wayward path
- mighty to give you purpose in life
- mighty to transform you from the inside out
Mary said, "My soul magnifies the Lord ... for the Mighty One has done great things for me, holy is His name." (Luke 1:46-49)
Praise Him today. Let YOUR soul magnify Him for all the great things He has done for you.
